Bears really must spend most of their energy on eating. When they emerge from their den in the spring, they are famished and the ones I observed only raised their heads from the greenery of the meadows to do a safety check. In the fall, they must prepare for the long winter and therefore again, eating becomes a priority. This particular bear had its own ideas for a salad bar. It would reach out and grab the tender branches with its giant paw and pull it in where it could either break it or bend it to get to the young leaves.
