Coyote DSC_6358 My friend Carol has the most beautiful gardens, the result of many years learning what colors, textures, and forms make the most impact. Every fall, she has to carefully protect them with chicken wire to prevent damage from her many rabbits and deer that love her gardens almost as much she does. Imagine her surprise to look out her window and see this female coyote curled up inside the four foot fence. A portion of the fence was pushed down, but at an angle that might have prevented the coyote from exiting. She called me to come over and photograph it with her as it could be seen from her sunroom which is right above this garden. It made my day because we had been out birdwatching and it had been a bust. Wild animals always fascinate me. When I look into their eyes, it is as though there is only that moment, like a true connection to something larger than myself. I'm always humbled and grateful for those experiences. Thank you Carol! After I took some photos, I called Joe to come and get me. When he saw the trapped animal, he volunteered, broom in hand to go down and unwrap an end of fencing to allow the coyote a way to get out. He's pretty low key, so I knew he had the calmness necessary to get that close. It was probably less than twenty feet away and I think we ran the risk that it could feel cornered. Now, he can add coyote whispering to his resume. lol After he was successful, we went home. Much later, Carol, seeing that it was still in the same spot, turned on the outside lighting which caused her to move around the enclosure.The coyote had been doing some gardening of her own trying to get out! Carol knew she would not come to where Joe made an exit until she felt safe, so she left her in peace. At about ten o'clock she was gone. If Carol has her wish, there will be less rabbits in the yard!
